Resveratrol^® belongs to a class of compounds called polyphenols and has been found in red wine, fueling the suspicion that it was the 'source' for the French Paradox. The French Paradox is the observation that cardiovascular risk and death from coronary artery disease is relatively low in France, even though the French ate more saturated fats and were more likely to smake cigarettes! This led to the speculation and confirmation that consumption of red wine was the reason for this protection from cardiovascular risk. It has been shown that this protective factor is Resveratrol^®.

Resveratrol has been shown to activate Sirtuin 1.  

Sirtuin 1 also known as NAD-dependent deacetylase. Sirtuin-1 is a protein that in humans is encoded by the SIRT1 gene. The SIRT1 gene encodes enzymes that control cellular longevity. There are possible ways to activate the SIRT1 gene, thus prolonging the lifespan of cells or delay the aging process. This has been reported in 2003 in Nature, one of the most prestigious scientific journals. This effect was observed first in yeast, and later in fruit flies and fish.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) has been shown to have important roles in oxidative protection in the body. For example, circulating CoQ10 in the LDL molecule (the "bad cholesterol") has been shown to prevent the "bad cholesterol" from oxidizing. As such it is an antioxidant and helps reduce cardiovascular disease and atherogenesis (plaque formation). It has been emphasized that CoQ 10 should be taken by patients who are on 'statin' drugs (cholesterol reducing drugs). Use of statins reduce CoQ10 levels. Aging reduces CoQ10 levels in the organs. Ultraviolet light (UV) reduces CoQ10 levels in the skin.
