Heart Disease in MenBy: Hratch L Karamanoukian, MD December 14, 2008 |

In 2004, over 900,000 Americans died from heart disease, making it the number 1 killer of men and women in the United States.
Several hundreds of thousands more men die from heart disease every year than women, and they die at an earlier age. The reasons are still eluding researchers. According to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), men are 30% more likely to suffer a stroke than are women, making it the third-leading cause of death in men. Both heart disease and stroke are sequelae of atherosclerotic heart disease, also known as "hardening of the vessels", a generalized end product of inflammation, elevated cholesterol and lipids and the effects of uncontrolled diabetes and hypertension. One in three men can expect to develop some major cardiovascular disease before the age of 60, according to the Department of Health and Human Services report. # # #
