How do I reduce my risk of developing lung cancer when I stop smoking?

By: Hratch L Karamanoukian, MD

December 14, 2008

A significant step to reducing lung cancer deaths begins with behavior modification. Scientists are studying methods to actually prevent the development of lung cancer. It is believed that legislation should be passed to give people a financial incentive to stop smoking; and perhaps a penalty to those that continue to smoke. Coupled with efforts to help people quit, this type of activity will certainly reduce the number of people who develop lung cancer.

Studies have confirmed that 85 to 95 percent of lung cancers are smoking related. Therefore, the primary way to reduce lung cancer death is to stop the public from smoking.

The risk for developing lung cancer in former smokers remains high, but this risk continues to fall with the number of years of smoking cessation. After 10 years of smoking cessation, a former smoker reduces their risk of developing lung cancer by approximately 60%.
