Dr. Hratch Karamanoukian, the Director of the Vein Treatment Center has contributed 5 chapters about venous disease in a new book that is now available through The American College of Phlebology - the name of the book is 'Healthy Veins ... Healthy Legs. A Patient's Guide to Phlebology'. The book is edited by Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian and Dr. Helane Fronek. A foreward to the book was written by Dr. Nick Morrison, Chairman of the American College of Phlebology, the premier national organization for specialists in venous diseases and disorders.

Hratch Karamanoukian,MD, FACS and Raffy Karamanoukian, MD, FACS are 2 of 3 Board Certified Phlebologists (vein specialists) in the Buffalo Niagara frontier. Dr. Hratch Karamanoukian also holds added Board Certification in Surgery (ABS, American Board of Surgery) and Thoracic Surgery (ABTS, American Board of Thoracic Surgery). Dr. Raffy Karamanoukian has added Board Certification in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. - A role for specific genetic risk factors for varicose veins and spider veins is not known. However, heredity does play a role in the development or susceptibility for development of valvular failure at the saphenofemoral junction - also called venous reflux.
- Of note, when an individual has venous reflux disease, the likelihood of his/her identical twin to have venous reflux disease exceeds 75%.
- The likelihood of a male to have a relative with a varicose vein is approximately 20%. The likelihood for a female patient to have a relative with vericose veins is 45%.
