The most frequent manifestations of venous thromboembolism in women taking oral contraceptivess are superficial vein thrombosis in the upper or lower extremities, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).
More rare thrombotic events such as intraabdominal thrombosis,, also known as mesenteric thrombosis, can allso occur.
Other rare thrombotic events with the use of oral contraceptives are cerebral sinus thrombosis.
Recent data regarding the impact of oral contraceptives on the development of venous thromboembolism suggest that all currently available products are associated with increased risk.
