The Venous Forum of the Royal Society of Medicine (RSMVF) has recently produced Advice on Venous ThromboEmbolism (VTE) Prophylaxis for patients who have Varicose Vein procedures.

The article was published by Isaac K Nyamekye and Bruce Campbell and published in Phlebology (March 2021).  See full refenrece below.

Venous thromboembolism risk factors to consider for varicose vein procedures:

    1. Personal or family history of venous thromboembolism

    2. Known thrombophilia

    3. Reduced mobility

    4. Obesity (BMI > 30)

    5. Hormone therapy

    6. Active cancer

    7. Chronic prothrombotic medical conditions

    8. Superficial vein thrombosis

    9. Covid-19 symptoms or positive test

"The RSMVF has concluded that failure to risk-assess properly and to give adequate pharmacological prophylaxis to patients with well-recognised risk factors is suboptimal practice".
